The Who

Who's Next
This one's been giving me writer's block. The Who, of course, was my favorite band during my teen years. Eventually, though, Pete Townshend's prickly arrogance, heroin addiction and his stubborn refusal to die before he got old (or at least keep his diminishing songwriting ability private) led me to question my obsession. So the band got tucked away on some mental shelf, where it stayed most of the time until you discovered them and I started hearing the music again outside the context of classic rock radio. That led me to understand, Townshend's personal flaws notwithstanding, how great this music is. Who's Next is the band's best - more intellectual than most other stuff coming out at the time, but not as pretentious as some of their other material.
