Persuasions

Chirpin'
One night during high school, I was buying some chilitos in Zantigo's, this fast food restaurant on 8th & Hennepin, when for some reason I can't recall I struck up this conversation about music with the guy at the counter. He suggested I give the Persuasions a listen, and it stuck in my mind because he kept telling to make sure it was the Persuasions and not the Persuaders. The Persuaders, he explained, were a good, but typical R & B group; the Persuasions were also R & B, but they were far from typical. I still probably would've forgotten the conversation, except that a few years later a guy I worked with at a record store unwrapped a copy of Chirpin' and put it on the store's turntable.  Damn, if the guy at Zantigo's hadn't been right, and his fervor entirely justified. A weird thing happened, though, when we played the record at the store (which we did a lot.) Customers loved it, almost always asking whom it was, but they hardly ever bought it.
