Elvis Presley

The Memphis Record
After a long bout of mediocrity, Elvis concentrates again on finding good, really good, material, and jacks up the level of his performance to match it. These sessions are the sound of someone rediscovering passion.
The Sun Sessions
One of the most autobiographical couplets I've ever written open an Elvis-inspired song the Ernies never performed. It starts:"As I recall, I didn't know what to do when I heard that you were gone. I couldn't cry but I sighed deep inside when I heard the news."  For someone of my generation, Elvis was a bloated, mostly dismissible enigma. Sure, I knew he was a key figure in the development of rock n' roll, but what had he done for us lately. Turns out it didn't matter, because what he did at the beginning was so great. When I hear "That's All Right Mama" now, I get chills imagining Elvis and the boys slipping into that shuffle rhythm in that little Memphis studio and changing the sound of music.
