OK, I gotta start with an admission – I was a little leery of the Black Caesar soundtrack my son gave me for Christmas. You just never know what you’re going to get with a soundtrack.
I should’ve had more faith in the Godfather of Soul and his faithful sidekick, Fred Wesley. Black Caesar contains some typically great, tight, super-funky grooves. It’s not classic James Brown in the same sense as "I Got You" or "Sex Machine." In fact, the tune that inspired me to write this, which I heard on the way to work this morning, has barely decipherable lyrics. It reminded me of Eddie Murphy’s SNL parody – all grunts and shouts, with not a single word you’d find in a dictionary. But it is absolutely GREAT stuff, and a nice change from those familiar classics.
